In the late 1940s, the Missouri River was dammed to create the massive Oahe, Sharpe, Francis Case, and Lewis & Clark reservoirs. These massive bodies of water together make up South Dakota’s Missouri River region and provide more than 440 miles of waterways for prime water recreation—including boating, fishing, sailing, kayaking and paddleboarding. Retrace the footsteps of Lewis and Clark along a famed trail, experience Native American heritage by visiting the Dignity: of Earth & Sky statue in Chamberlain, or check out the South Dakota Hall of Fame. Head out into the fields for some good ol' pheasant hunting in Pierre, or visit South Dakota's State Capitol before unwinding on the more than 3,000 miles of shoreline of the Missouri National Recreational River.
