Pierre

Located in the center of the state, Pierre (pronounced “peer”) is South Dakota’s capital and the second-smallest capital city in the country. Just across the Missouri River is its sister city, Fort Pierre. Together, the two cities offer plenty of museums, scenic views and outdoor recreation.

Tour the State Capitol building and the nearby Museum of the South Dakota State Historical Society  to get a glimpse into the state’s history. Next, explore the South Dakota National Guard Museum or bring the kids to the South Dakota Discovery Center. Get outdoors at LaFramboise Island Nature Area and Farm Island Recreation Area. Or, catch a rodeo at the Casey Tibbs South Dakota Rodeo Center.

Pierre’s Christmas at the Capitol is a holiday spectacular. Witness the Grand Tree Lighting Ceremony before roaming the halls of the capitol building to see fabulous holiday displays and festive live music. With live entertainment, beer gardens and dozens of local arts & craft vendors, you won’t want to miss the Oahe Days Arts and Music Festival. But South Dakota also offers some of the best pheasant hunting opportunities in the nation. The season runs mid-October through late-January, and Pierre makes a great home base for hunting trips. And with BBQ competitions, a cornhole tournament, morning yoga and suncatcher painting, Fort Pierre Trader Days is a three-day festival full of eclectic activities to enjoy.
