South Dakotans take their fireworks seriously, spending all year planning the perfect aerial displays for Independence Day. This year, those fireworks pack an even bigger bang as communities across South Dakota celebrate America’s 250th birthday. We’ve rounded up some of the most impressive places in the state to watch the sky light up. Expect plenty of smiles glowing under the rockets’ red glare!

Black Hills Roundup
Belle Fourche, July 1–4, 2026
Since its start in 1918 as a World War I fundraiser, the Black Hills Roundup has become one of the country’s longest-running and most beloved outdoor rodeos. The event returns this year with rousing concerts and a carnival full of classic rides, plus a ranch rodeo and four days of PRCA rodeo action. Look for dedicated nights recognizing groups like families and military, plus two nights of fireworks.

Sitting Bull Stampede Rodeo
Mobridge, July 2–4, 2026
Be part of this three-day, family-friendly celebration in Mobridge with rodeos, a carnival, parades and a big fireworks show on the final night. The main rodeo events start at 7:30 p.m., when big-name cowboys and cowgirls take over the arena for a true Western showdown. A Mobridge tradition since 1945, this summer highlight is the town’s biggest event of the year.

Gold Camp Jubilee
Lead, July 2–5, 2026
Blending small-town charm with big-time patriotic energy, Lead's Gold Camp Jubilee tips its hat to the city's rich gold-mining history. Promising its biggest event ever in 2026, you'll find a car show, live entertainment, pickleball and volleyball tournaments, and a variety of vendors. The annual Lead parade ambles down historic Main Street at 4:15 p.m. on July 4, with fireworks — some of the Black Hills' biggest — launching at dusk (around 9:30 p.m.).

Fort Pierre’s 4th of July Parade, Rodeo & Fireworks
Fort Pierre, July 3–4, 2026
Fort Pierre, home of the Casey Tibbs South Dakota Rodeo Center, observes Independence Day with a parade and two nights of rodeo action. Expect high-flying thrills, from a military bomber flyover to calf roping and bull riding, before the second night ends in a fireworks finale.

Mount Rushmore Fireworks
Keystone, July 3, 2026
Fireworks over Mount Rushmore National Memorial haven't happened since 2020, which makes this a rare celebration. This year, Mount Rushmore is hosting a monumental fireworks display on July 3 in honor of America’s semiquincentennial celebration. Details on ticket lotteries and viewing information can be found on the Mount Rushmore Fireworks page. The park will close to the general public on the evening of July 2nd and remained closed on July 3rd. Only lottery ticket winners will be allowed to access the park on July 3rd. While the fireworks event itself will have limited capacity, the memorial will be open to all visitors throughout the rest of Independence Day weekend.

Custer’s Fourth of July Celebration
Custer, July 3–4, 2026
A short drive from majestic Custer State Park, Custer’s Fourth of July delights with everything from a street dance and old-fashioned games to live music and an arts and crafts fair. The Fourth kicks off with a Patriot's Parade downtown, and the fireworks fly from Pageant Hill around 9:30 p.m., making it easy to watch the big show from spots around town.

Rock the Bluffs Fireworks
Chamberlain, July 4, 2026
Fireworks burst above the bridge connecting Chamberlain and Oacoma, booming over the Missouri River causeway on the night of the Fourth. The party starts early with a morning fun run, followed by a Main Street parade and lunch. When it’s time for the big show, stake out a spot on either side of the river for a front-row view.

Yankton All-American 4th of July Celebration & Fireworks
Yankton, July 4, 2026
Spend the Fourth in Yankton with a full day of concerts and fun for all ages in Riverside Park, where the schedule typically includes everything from face painting to yoga sessions. Fireworks round out the night with a free show — southeastern South Dakota’s largest — launching from the upper deck of the Meridian Bridge.

Fall River 4th of July
Hot Springs, July 4, 2026
Hot Springs’ annual Fourth of July festivities all lead up to a dazzling fireworks display at 9 p.m. The morning begins with the Firecracker Mile/5K/10K, followed by a parade and a free community picnic at lunchtime. Later on, watch the adorable FireQuacker Duck Race starting at Centennial Park Bridge.

Uncle Sam Jam brings patriotic fun to Brookings, with music, games, activities and food aplenty. No tickets needed — just show up, grab a spot on the lawn of the Dacotah Bank Center and settle in for a night of live tunes and fireworks.

Centerville Tornado Days: This three-day festival in Centerville, just southwest of Sioux Falls, charms with a kid-friendly treasure hunt, a street dance and the can’t-miss toilet-bowl race — a quirky crowd favorite — with fireworks on the final night.
- Interior 4th of July: The town throws down with a morning parade, a car show and a cornhole tournament before fireworks illuminate the Badlands’ pitch-black skies.
- Wylie Park 4th of July Celebration: Spend the day at Aberdeen’s one-of-a-kind Wylie Park, racing go-karts and wandering through Storybook Land and The Land of Oz. When the sun sets, claim your patch of grass to see the park's Independence Day fireworks explode over the lake.
- Springfield 4th of July Celebration: This community on the western edge of Lewis and Clark Lake stretches Independence Day into a three-day fest filled with volleyball, cornhole and beanbag tournaments, a 5K race, crowd-pleasing mutton busting and a fireworks show that lights up the sky on the Fourth.
- Mitchell July 4th Fireworks: Check out live music, a car show and plenty of down-home grub before the glittering display over Lake Mitchell in this home of The World’s Only Corn Palace.
- Lake Norden Community Barbecue & Independence Day Celebration: Lake Norden in northeastern South Dakota serves up smoky barbecue, bounce houses, balloon art and a baseball game, culminating in one of the largest fireworks shows in the area.
