Guide to South Dakota's Best Fireworks

Every summer, the South Dakota skies fill with vibrant explosions of color. Prepare to “ooh” and “ah” as fireworks blaze across the night at these celebrations.

South Dakotans take their fireworks seriously, spending all year planning the perfect aerial displays for Independence Day. This year, those fireworks pack an even bigger bang as communities across South Dakota celebrate America’s 250th birthday. We’ve rounded up some of the most impressive places in the state to watch the sky light up. Expect plenty of smiles glowing under the rockets’ red glare!

Fireworks explode over Mount Rushmore National Memorial, with the face of the sculpture illuminated by their multicolored light.

Mount Rushmore Fireworks

Keystone, July 3, 2026

Fireworks over Mount Rushmore National Memorial haven't happened since 2020, which makes this a rare celebration. This year, Mount Rushmore is hosting a monumental fireworks display on July 3 in honor of America’s semiquincentennial celebration. Details on ticket lotteries and viewing information can be found
on the Mount Rushmore Fireworks page. The park will close to the general public on the evening of July 2nd and remained closed on July 3rd. Only lottery ticket winners will be allowed to access the park on July  3rd. While the fireworks event itself will have limited capacity, the memorial will be open to all visitors throughout the rest of Independence Day weekend.
