PIERRE, S.D. – One of America’s most endearing singer-songwriters, Don McLean, will appear on the Mount Rushmore’s American Pride float in the 86th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®. McLean will perform his 1971 hit “American Pie.”
“We are really excited to have the honor of such a renowned artist perform on our float,” said South Dakota Department of Tourism Secretary Jim Hagen. “His iconic ‘American Pie’ is known around the world, and I can already hear parade-goers and those watching on television singing along.”
This is the Department of Tourism’s third year of appearing on a float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The goal of the promotional campaign is to drive new and repeat visitors to South Dakota, in addition to creating brand awareness. It is estimated that more than 3.5 million spectators on the streets of New York City and more than 50 million television viewers nationwide will watch the parade.
Don McLean and the American Pride float will make their national appearance on NBC-TV on Thursday, Nov. 22, between 9 a.m. and noon in all time zones. The Department of Tourism will continue to release information about marketing efforts associated with the parade, including information about a vacation giveaway promotion.
The South Dakota Department of Tourism is comprised of Tourism, the South Dakota Arts Council, and the South Dakota State Historical Society. The Department is led by Secretary James D. Hagen.
