PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Tourism has been recognized by Travel Weekly for work created in 2017. The department was recently awarded a total of three Travel Weekly Magellan Awards.
The Magellan Awards honor outstanding design, marketing and services in a broad range of industry segments including Hospitality, Travel Destinations, Cruise Lines, Online Travel Services, Airlines and Airports, Travel Agents and Agencies, Tour Operators, and Ground Transportation.
The Department of Tourism’s “My Great Place” campaign—which included TV, direct mail, print and outdoor elements—received a Gold Award. The Department also received a Silver Award for its Visitor Insights Email. The cooperative marketing campaign with Deadwood and the Department of Tourism, themed “No Rules No Regrets,” was recognized with a Silver Award. All three projects were done in partnership with Sioux Falls-based marketing and advertising agency Lawrence & Schiller.
"This is incredible news,” said South Dakota Department of Tourism Secretary James Hagen. "We’re thrilled about the awards, but honestly, it’s the company we’re in that has us most excited. With entries from across the U.S. and around the world, South Dakota Tourism joins winners representing the best in the travel industry.”
Arnie Weissman, editor-in-chief of Travel Weekly, says Magellan winners are those in the industry who “communicate travel’s promise through words, images and design, in ways that ring true and stand out. They create the environments and craft the messages that spark travelers’ imaginations.”
The Magellan Awards are judged and overseen by a one-of-a-kind panel of top travel professionals representing the best names and most accomplished leaders from the industry. In determining winners, entries do not compete with one another. Instead, they are judged against a standard of excellence based on the long experience of Travel Weekly. To uphold this high standard of excellence, a category may have multiple winners, or may have no winners at all.
