Department of Tourism Awarded Two 2017 Gold Magellan Awards from Travel Weekly
PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Tourism and its agency partner, Lawrence & Schiller in Sioux Falls, S.D., have received two gold Magellan Awards for elements created for the 2016 My Great Place marketing campaign. The My Great Place Magnet Direct Mail and the My Great Place Out-Of-Home efforts each received a gold award (the highest possible) by Travel Weekly, a well-respected and influential publication for the travel industry.
“Destinations all over the U.S. and the world entered the contest and we were honored along with major brands like Visit California, Brand USA, Miami Beach, Hawaii and Las Vegas,” said Jim Hagen, Secretary of the Department of Tourism.
“There were also several international destinations like Hong Kong, Aruba, Travel Manitoba and South Africa that were given gold awards in the Destination category, putting South Dakota in some pretty outstanding company,” Hagen continued.
The My Great Place Magnet Direct Mail piece won a gold trophy for “Destination Marketing-Direct Mail for Destinations.” It was a multiple fold piece that included a removable fridge magnet frame in the shape of South Dakota. It was mailed to select zip codes in and around the emerging market of Chicago in the spring of 2016.
The My Great Place Out-of-Home efforts won a gold award in the “United States/Canada - Overall Destinations-Family Destination” category. This effort included a series of large billboards and extensions in Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver, Des Moines and Kansas City, along with Mall of America signage, entrance wraps at Southdale Shopping Center in Edina, Minnesota, and signage behind home plate in select major league baseball stadiums.
