Lonely Planet Recognizes South Dakota as One of Best Places to Visit

12/11/2014

PIERRE, S.D. – Lonely Planet, the world’s leading travel media company, has recognized western South Dakota as one of their “Best in the US” destinations for 2015. The company announced their fifth annual “best of” list this morning, which is determined by Lonely Planet’s expert authors and their U.S.-based editorial team.

“We were excited and honored to find out that western South Dakota was chosen as part of this prestigious list,” said Jim Hagen, Secretary of the Department of Tourism. “To be recognized among prominent peers in the industry is humbling, and we’re grateful to have so many outstanding visitor opportunities in South Dakota to share with travelers in 2015 and beyond.”

Lonely Planet’s “Best in the US” list consists of 10 places that Lonely Planet recommends travelers should add to their wish lists for the coming year. The chosen destinations are emerging, up-and-coming, or have a timely angle that makes them prime places for visitors in 2015. In addition to iconic national and state parks and memorials, as well as family attractions and unique events, the list calls out the 50th anniversary of the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup and the 75th anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
