The Evening Lighting Ceremony at Mount Rushmore National Memorial is held beginning the Friday before Memorial Day through September 30 each year. From May through early August, the ceremony starts nightly at 9 p.m., and from early August through September 30, it starts nightly at 8 p.m. From October through May, there is no ceremony, but the sculpture is illuminated nightly at sunset. Join us for our ranch rodeo with events such as trailer loading, mini bronc riding, stray gathering, hide race, and the range ride. For the kids, we have a boot and candy scramble. It's a fun time for spectators and contestants alike. This annual event, occurring the third weekend in July, is held at the Murdo Rodeo Arena on the north side of Murdo. Opening day of the pheasant hunting season in South Dakota is the third Saturday of October. The season then lasts through January 31 of the following year. Shooting hours are 10 a.m. (Central Time) to sunset for the entire season. (Central Time is used for opening shooting hours statewide.) The greatest show on snow returns to Deadwood as the ISOC Amsoil Championship Snocross Series hits the Black Hills for the annual Deadwood Pro Snocross Races. More than 200 of the top professional Snocross racers will descend on the historic town's Days of '76 Rodeo Grounds for a weekend of high-flying, high-speed, high-octane snowmobile racing. Vermillion’s Ribs, Rods & Rock n’ Roll knows how to host a barbeque. Enjoy a KCBS sponsored BBQ cookoff, with approximately 30 teams from across the Midwest, as well as many local teams. Mouth-watering ribs, cold drinks, live music, street dance, classic cars, kids activity area, cornhole tournament, and vendors who line the streets and draw thousands of visitors to historic downtown Vermillion each year. The Run Crazy Horse Half Marathon is a point-to-point course beginning at the Visitors Center at Crazy Horse Memorial. The first three miles are within the Memorial grounds on both paved and gravel roads. At mile 3, the course becomes the Mickelson Trail. For the Half Marathoners, the last 10 miles are a mixture of downhill and flat terrain. Miles 3-16 of the Full Marathon will be an out and back mainly on the Mickelson Trail. Outside of Crazy Horse Memorial, marathoner runners will turn south on the Mickelson Trail to the turnaround in Custer. At Mile 16, it will be downhill back into Hill City to finish on Main Street. The five-person Marathon Relay will follow the same course as the Full Marathon. The relay exchange points will be between 5-7 miles apart. Other races include a fast 5K and a kids 1K.
