What started as a mining community has transformed into a place of art & recreation while never losing its natural beauty.

Simply put, Hill City is one of the most beautiful places in South Dakota. Surrounded by the natural splendor of the Black Hills, this town of 1,018 people is full of opportunities to relax, go on an adventure, or both. Rent a bike or put on some comfy shoes before hopping on the Mickelson Trail, a 109-mile trail that provides gorgeous views of the Black Hills National Forest. Want a bird’s-eye look? Let Black Hills Aerial Adventures take you on a helicopter trip over some of South Dakota’s most awe-inspiring sites.

Enjoy a legendary meal at the Alpine Inn, a historic Bavarian hotel and restaurant that’s often a repeat destination for anyone who’s savored the place’s old-world charm and flavors. Grab a glass of wine or a pint of beer at Prairie Berry Winery & Miner Brewing Company, Firehouse Smokejumper Station or some of the other easily located wine and beer options in the area. Take a ride on the 1880 Train, marvel at amazing collection of fossils at the Museum @ Black Hills Institute, and check out museums dedicated to the area’s railroad history, Civilian Conservation Corps, or the world’s largest collection of teddy bears.

Hill City also a perfect headquarters for exploring the best of western South Dakota. Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Crazy Horse Memorial are just minutes away, as are the Cathedral Spires, Black Elk Peak, and scenic byways and wildlife viewing opportunities of Custer State Park. Rock climbing, horseback riding, ATV/UTVs, and helicopter rides are all easy to secure in this area best known for being “the heart of the Black Hills.”
