Members of the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery visited Spirit Mound on August 25, 1804. With the damming of the Missouri River, most of the sites the expedition visited are now underwater. There are very few places where someone can stand today and know that Lewis and Clark stood in the same location. Spirit Mound is one of those few special sites. Located north of Vermillion in southeastern South Dakota, the area offers wheelchair-accessible hiking trails, interpretive signs and picnic tables.
