South Dakota Pheasant Hunting

Fields that go on forever, a time-honored tradition and more birds than anywhere else. It doesn’t get any greater than this.

The cackle of a rooster. The rush of the flush. A hunt in the heart of South Dakota's legendary pheasant country is a thrill like no other. Anyone who’s walked our fields knows why. From 2024 to 2025, the pheasant harvest increased by 3% for a total of 1.35 million birds! You’d have to add up the total harvests from neighboring states to get numbers like ours.

Numbers Don’t Lie:

  • 2 million acres of public land
  • 1.35 million roosters harvested in 2025
  • 9.7+ birds harvested per hunter in 2025

And the way things are looking, 2026 is going to be off the charts, thanks to conservation efforts and ideal weather conditions.

2026 Season at a Glance

Shooting Preserve Season

Sept. 1, 2026–March 31, 2027

For an extended opportunity to hunt, licensed shooting preserves are open to nonresident hunters with a specific Shooting Preserve License, Small Game License or Youth Small Game License. Many preserves are operated by experienced guides and outfitters who can help take the guesswork out of planning your hunt.

Youth Season

Sept. 26–Oct. 4, 2026

For nine days before the resident-only season begins, youth hunters aged 12–17 with a valid hunter safety certificate and a Small Game License can experience the thrill of pheasant hunting with an adult by their side. Whether they're bagging their first bird or building their confidence in the field, it's a chance to be part of a rich tradition.

Resident-Only Season

Oct. 10–12, 2026

Every year for three days before the start of the traditional season, licensed residents can get a jump on pheasant hunting. South Dakotans have unparalleled access to coveted public lands and millions of pheasants. Talk about a home-field advantage.
