Deep in the north-central South Dakota prairie, the small farming community of Faulkton stands out for its impressive public art and preserved historic sites. Take time to explore mural-filled streets, check out an event, enjoy family-friendly activities and browse locally owned shops on Main Street. So, where will you go first?

Spend Time Outdoors

Fresh air and wide-open spaces set the pace in Faulkton. Start at Lakeside Country Club, a nine-hole golf course with water views and daily green fees, no membership required. Just steps away, Lake Faulkton blends relaxation and adventure — fish for perch and northern pike, camp, stroll the shoreline and spot wildlife at the state game refuge. Then stop to smell the flowers at the City Garden, with its seasonal blooms, shaded benches and winding paths.

Discover Local History & Public Art

Faulkton may be small, but its cultural punch isn’t. Tour the Pickler Mansion, a 20-room Victorian “Pink Castle” that once hosted Susan B. Anthony and Theodore Roosevelt. Then look up at the Faulkton Grain Elevator Mural, one of the largest art structures in the state. Painted by Australian artist Guido van Helten, it captures the agricultural spirit of the town on a grand scale. Keep exploring and you’ll find murals brightening buildings throughout the town, including the courthouse and library.

Shop & Dine Along Main Street

Faulkton’s charming Main Street is where daily life unfolds. Find one-of-a-kind treasures at Corner Consignments and The Shops, or visit Quilter’s Corner, a quilting outfitter that draws crafters from miles around.

Pull up a stool at Blondie’s Tables and Taps for weekly burger specials, or head to J & J Bar or Short Stop Bar for cold drinks and good company. Stop into Buttercup, a cozy Main Street cafe and boutique serving specialty coffee and homemade treats, or stock up at Bauer’s Grocery before hitting the road.

Where Families Go for Fun

Ride one of the original aluminum horses on the City Carousel, a preserved 100-year-old C.W. Parker creation and a Faulkton rite of passage that is always free to enjoy. Let the kids loose at Hope's Park & Playground, a community-built space with outdoor musical instruments and accessible fun for all. Cool off at the Faulkton Swimming Pool, cheer from the stands at the Baseball Complex or catch a show at the Lyric Theatre, a 75-year-old movie house with the best popcorn around.

Celebrate Local Events

Don’t miss Wild West Days over the Fourth of July weekend, featuring bull riding, a hometown parade and live music. Return for Cresbard Corn Fest in August, the fall Craft Fair in October and the Parade of Lights in December.
