South Dakota National & State Parks

Newton Hills hosts many activities during the summer season. Each program is geared for families with young children and will expose participants to the natural and cultural features of the park. More than 200 species of birds visit the area each year. White-tailed deer, wild turkeys, marmots, rabbits, red and gray fox and squirrels are also found within the park. There are 128 campsites, eight cabins and 10 horse camp sites.

Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1935 as a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. The Refuge is located in southwestern South Dakota in Bennett County southeast of Martin, and is the only refuge in South Dakota headquartered west of the Missouri River. It is in the Central Flyway, which is one of four major migratory bird flyways in North America. Large numbers of trumpeter swans, shorebirds and other waterfowl may be observed from October through March. You will likely see white tailed deer, ring-necked pheasants, prairie grouse, and many other species depending on the time of year. The Refuge's wetland resources create a sanctuary within the semi-arid Great Plains landscape and provide a wide diversity of uses for wildlife and humans alike. The Refuge provides numerous recreation opportunities to thousands of visitors each year. People enjoy viewing the unique geology and diverse wildlife via boat, vehicle and foot. Enjoy trails, off-trail hiking, kayaking, wildlife viewing, bird watching, fishing and hunting. The Refuge is open from sunrise to sunset.

Springfield Recreation Area is nestled along the shore with breathtaking views of the Missouri River in southeastern South Dakota. Adjacent to the park overlooking the river is a beautiful nine-hole golf course and a bike trail connects the park to the town of Springfield. Facilities include 20 campsites, two camping cabins, a fishing dock, a boat ramp, a picnic shelter and a playground.

The premier trail within the South Dakota State Park system, this 109-mile jewel stretches the length of the Black Hills. It follows an abandoned railroad bed, and climbs gently into jagged cliffs and pine forests. The Mickelson Trail has a crushed limestone surface and wide path. It tops out at 6,100 feet but rarely exceeds a 4-percent grade (making it perfect for leisure riders). Trestle bridges and railroad tunnels add to the charm of the trail. Start your adventure at any of 15 trailheads.

Although small in size, Lake Alvin has become a very popular area. This 59-acre park is best known for its beach facilities and excellent fishing and boating. Its proximity to Sioux Falls and Newton Hills State Park make it a great place to enjoy a day on the beach. Anglers can expect to catch walleye, northern pike, crappie, sunfish, perch, catfish and bullheads. The 105-acre lake is the perfect size for any boat and motor; however, the lake is designated as a no-wake zone.

The history of Fort Sisseton stretches back more than 130 years, when a series of forts were established in eastern Dakota Territory under the direction of Maj. Gen. John Pope. While in operation, the soldiers stationed at the fort ensured safe passage for settlers, surveyors and others into the Dakota Territory. In 1959, the fort was designated a State Historical Park. This 1864 frontier army outpost has 14 of the original buildings still intact.

The third-longest cave in the world features a variety of cave tours below the surface and a 1,279-acre park with nature trails above ground. With a name derived from the crystals that line its walls, Jewel Cave is even more significant as one of the longest caves in the world, with more than 208 miles of mapped and surveyed passages. Located near Custer in the southern Black Hills, this national monument also features three self-guided above-ground trails: the Roof Trail, the Canyons Trail and the Hell Canyon Trail. Plus, there is a visitor center with an information desk, park store, exhibits, a theater, information about the Junior Ranger program and more.

After Custer State Park on the western side of South Dakota, this park in the southeastern corner is the second-most visited in the state. The center of activity for the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area is the 25-mile Lewis and Clark Lake. The lake is one of four large reservoirs on the Missouri River in South Dakota, this one created by Gavins Point Dam. Water recreation is the number one attraction, but there are also opportunities for hiking, biking, camping, disc golf, horseshoes and birding.

Angostura Reservoir is a water-lover's haven with breathtaking, scenic views. Offering crystal clear waters, 36 miles of shoreline and some of the finest sandy beaches in the state. The area boasts many water sports and fun activities - camping, boating, fishing and swimming. Its fishery is known for its walleye, smallmouth bass, crappie, and also supports northern pike, largemouth bass, perch and bluegill. Angostura Recreation Area is located in the southern Black Hills of western South Dakota.
