Witness History on the Lewis and Clark Trail

Pierre sits along the legendary 4,900-mile Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. Prior to Lewis and Clark’s arrival, the Missouri River area had long been part of the ancestral lands of the Oceti Šakówiŋ, the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota Oyáte, whose deep cultural ties to the area continue today. Parts of the trail overlap with the Native American National and State Scenic Byway, which follows the Missouri River through tribal lands and communities.

A must-visit is LaFramboise Island Nature Area, documented by Lewis and Clark in 1804. This lush island hosts native cottonwood trees and meadows, perfect for hiking, birdwatching, canoeing and stargazing. In the winter, it transforms into a prime destination for cross-country skiing.

Get to Know South Dakota’s Capital

Beyond the outdoors, Pierre has rich cultural and historical attractions. Take a tour of the South Dakota State Capitol to admire its intricate stained glass, original artwork and commanding architecture. Outside, the grounds feature the Trail of Governors and memorials honoring South Dakota’s leaders and veterans. Families will enjoy interactive, hands-on science exhibits at the South Dakota Discovery Center, while history buffs can look forward to the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center, scheduled for a grand reopening in mid-2026.
