Snacks of South Dakota
Exploration + tasty treats = happy you
Local cuisine is important. To some – including this author – potato chips count. When on a SoDak adventure, don’t forget to snag some of the finest treats made right here in South Dakota.

The Original Kimball Popcorn Ball
Gooey. Chewy. Taste buds? Kablooey. These delicious popcorn balls make the perfect road snack, providing evenly distributed sweetness with every bite. Keep your eyes open throughout South Dakota and beyond for these treats that seem to grow in popularity every year. They claim to be the best popcorn ball in the world, and we’ve yet to meet one that indicates otherwise.

Chief’s Bloody Mary
The crew at Waddy’s Bar & Grill in tiny Hudson, SD, needed something to get customers through the door on a Sunday. “The Chief” decided to whip up a Bloody Mary mix that tasted so good that demand led to thousands of gallons being sold across the country. If you want a delectable bloody mary that’ll get your tastebuds dancing, grab a bottle of Chief’s and enjoy. And if you’re in southeast SoDak, stop into Waddy’s for a delightful Bloody Mary in the easternmost town in the state.

Dakota Style Chips
If there’s a crunchier chip in the world, we haven’t found it. Dakota Style chips have found dedicated fans across the country thanks to their combination of crunch and flavors that include dill pickle, honey mustard, and spicy ranch. It’s not all about the chips, though. Dakota style also makes flavored pretzel sticks. Bonus? Stop in Clark (pop. 1,200) during Potato Days and enjoy some salty snacks as you watch the annual Mashed Potato Wrestling.

Dakota’s Best Options
Based in Rapid City, Dakota’s Best takes their name seriously, distributing meat products, cheese, mustard, jellies, salsa and more across the area. Any make for a perfect road trip snack. All make for a true travel feast.
Don’t stop the snacking now. Check out South Dakota’s favorite foods and the state’s best restaurants to experience all the deliciousness South Dakota has to offer. Enjoy!
