Just an hour south of Sioux Falls in the southeastern region of the state, Union Grove State Park is nestled in a lush grove of native woods. This picturesque natural haven offers a diverse array of recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Here, equestrians, hikers, bikers and cross-country skiers can enjoy several miles of trails through the trees and along Brule Creek. Union Grove State Park offers a year-round outdoor experience, catering to those seeking both active adventure and peaceful immersion in nature.
History
For centuries, Indigenous tribes, specifically the Yankton and Yanktonai bands of the Oceti Sakowin, inhabited the area that would become Union Grove State Park. Their presence shaped the human history of the land until the arrival of white settlers in the 19th century. In 1858, a treaty with these tribes ceded the land, permitting legal settlement that led to the formation of Union County.
The park's origins date back to a county project in 1936. The construction of a dam on Brule Creek created a lake. The dam has since been removed, the lake's waters replaced with silt. In 1946, the land was officially leased to the State of South Dakota, transitioning it from a county-run site to a state-managed recreational area.

Located an hour south of Sioux Falls, Union Grove is easily accessible from Interstate 29
