Take a walk back in time...to the early 1880s when Dakota Territory saw homesteaders coming to the great open prairie, breaking sod in search of a new start...a new beginning...a new life. The railroad was the lifeline for this burgeoning land, bringing with it pioneers, their belongings and hope. One of Plankinton’s earliest buildings was the Commercial House Hotel, a grand structure, residing just east and south of the railroad tracks. This hotel became an oasis for railroad passengers and traveling men. In 1906 George and Ella Sweep purchased the hotel. Ella's hospitality of fine meals and cleanliness became known far and wide. Today, the building is home to a railroad museum, visitor center, and cultural heritage center.Sweet Grass Bakery and Coffee Shop

Sweetgrass Soaps began as a farm, a dream between my husband and I, to live self sufficiently on our own chunk of chemical free earth. We have now grown and harvested countless herbs, wild and hand sown, our own beeswax and honey, fruits and the fats of the land to provide real, sustainable, chemical free ingredients for all my bath and body products. My ancestors are among the Hidatsa, Mandan, and Standing Rock Sioux. I present my products with great pride and do all I can to honor the great people of the plains that made use of the natural bounty of our prairies. During the summer and autumn months, gardening is a primary focus for Swift Family Enterprises near Burke. Continuing the annual tradition of growing pumpkins, the oldest children planted their first batches of seed with Grandpa's expertise to guide them. What had begun as Grandpa and Grandma's retirement hobby soon blossomed into a small business venture as the younger ones expanded the patch to include different varieties of pumpkins, squash, and gourds. The produce - along with straw bales, baskets, and occasionally pumpkin bread - is available for sale at a roadside stand next to the farm from the beginning of September through the end of October each year. We generally welcome any individual, family, or group who wishes to pick their own produce from the vine. Please schedule an appointment first by calling, emailing, or messaging us.Sylvan Lake Lodge
