Located on the eastern edge of South Dakota, the Big Sioux Recreation Area lies on the banks of the Big Sioux River. Close to the cities of Brandon and Sioux Falls, Big Sioux is popular among campers, canoers, bicyclists, hikers, disc golfers, history buffs and archers. When the snow flies, groups of snowmobilers gather at the enclosed warming house. There are 49 campsites and three cabins. The Big Sky Lodge is located one mile from downtown Rapid City. It sits on Skyline Drive and offers amazing views of the Black Hills. Amenities include laundry facilities and a seasonal outdoor hot tub. Complimentary continental breakfast is available from the end of May through the end of September. An 1823 expedition led by Major Stephan Long and geologist William Keating explored the Big Stone Lake region. Shortly after entering present-day South Dakota, they met an American Indian village on a rocky island (Big Island). This island, also known as Kite Island, is now the 100-acre nature area. It is a natural refuge for a variety of birds and wildlife, and is accessible only by boat, canoe or kayak.Big Stone Pumpkin Patch
At Big Stone Pumpkin Patch near Big Stone City, we offer pick-your-own pumpkins, plus pre-picked pumpkins of all sizes, gourds, specialty pumpkins, Indian Corn, straw bales and corn shocks. We also have hayrides, a corn maze, a jumping pillow, a corn dig, climbing bales and barrel train rides. Our barn is available for weddings and private events. The Pumpkin Patch is open late September through October, and our hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.Big Thunder Gold Mine
Big Thunder Gold Mine (originally named Gold Hill Lode) was discovered in 1892 by two German immigrant miners. Today, it contains the most types of rocks, structures and minerals indigenous to the area, and it offers mine tours, a mining museum and gold panning. There is also a full-service eatery and a gift shop. Located in Keystone, we are open daily, April through October (see our hours online).
