Established in 2000, the Badlands Observatory is a private facility for research, education and stargazing located in the small community of Quinn. For more than 10 years, owner Ron Dyvig contributed data to the Minor Planet Center in support of their mapping project for Near Earth Objects. In later years, the Observatory primarily provided telescope time to institutions and students. Since 2019, Ron and partner Teresa have been upgrading the facility and fine-tuning their programming in order to create a favorable experience for visitors, including daytime tours and night sky programs. Guided tours are available daily. Daytime tours are provided by reservation
only, and may be made by phone or email. Daytime tours can start as early as 9
a.m. and as late as 1 p.m. They last approximately 1.5 hours. The cost is $10
per person, 10 years and older. Night tours vary with the phase of the moon,
sunset times and sky conditions, and cost $29.70 per person, 10 years and older.

Baker’s Bakery & Cafe in Custer is a modern day “Hash House” that serves the #1 breakfast in South Dakota - according to Everyday with Rachel Ray Magazine (March 2014 issue). We have a full breakfast and lunch menu as well as fresh pastries, donuts and espresso bar. Everything is served on or with homemade bread. Beer and wine are also available. There are three dining rooms that seat approximately 100 people. We are open daily, 6:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

Nestled on 80 acres in the Black Hills, Battle Creek Camping Resort, is located off Highway 40 and Battle Creek Road. We are approximately five miles west of the town of Hermosa (which is about 17 miles straight south of Rapid City). Our resort is open year-round and provides fully-stocked, unique camping options to pick from. Currently, all of our 120 RV sites are boondocks option only (no water or septic hookups), while under construction. Pull-through and back-up sites are 100-foot pads. Our glampground has lodges, domes, bell and wall tents and one-of-a-kind tents which are equipped with the necessary amenities.
