Spearfish Canyon State Nature Area includes the Roughlock Falls, Spearfish Falls and the Savoy Pond area south of Spearfish and west of Lead. A trail system connects all three areas and offers spectacular views of the waterfalls and foliage in the fall. Bird watching, wildlife viewing, fishing and picnicking can all be enjoyed in the nature area. Be on the lookout for the rare American Dipper, a stocky, gray bird often spotted catching its food underwater by swimming or walking on the stream bottom. Spearfish Canyon - which is along Highway 14A, also known as the Spearfish Canyon State Scenic Byway - is considered one of the most beautiful locations in the Black Hills. Spearfish Valley Produce's Spearfish Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch is located about three miles northwest of Spearfish. Bring your family and find your way through the maze. After finishing the corn maze, visit our patch to pick out the perfect pumpkin for carving and decorating. Pumpkins of all sizes and shapes will be available. Price will vary based on the size of the pumpkin. Numerous other activities include a hay jump, tire climb, duck race, hay slide, bee-line, barrel train, bale pets, corn box and petting zoo. The 71,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Spearfish Rec & Aquatics Center (SRAC) opened in 2008, having been transformed from a box store to a recreation and community center. Today it is a place where you can find community, youth and family events, fitness and fun. Parties, meetings, family gatherings, school programs, PE classes, sports practices, roller skating, pool parties, leagues, tournaments, community events, holiday events…the list goes on. SRAC is a place where fun and fitness happen. Part of the facility is a two-acre outdoor water park that is open from late May (Memorial Day) through early September (Labor Day). Members of the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery visited Spirit Mound on August 25, 1804. With the damming of the Missouri River, most of the sites the expedition visited are now underwater. There are very few places where someone can stand today and know that Lewis and Clark stood in the same location. Spirit Mound is one of those few special sites. Located north of Vermillion in southeastern South Dakota, the area offers wheelchair-accessible hiking trails, interpretive signs and picnic tables.
