Experience an old west shootout aboard the 1880 Train this summer. Dates for 2025 are June 8, 15, 22 and 29; July 6, 13, 20 and 27; and August 17 and 31. The shootout begins at the Hill City station, 5 p.m. round trip departure. A few bad guys board the train and hide their treasure. The train is stopped by cowboys and “held up” halfway between Hill City and Keystone. It's a good thing the sheriff is in town! The mission of the South Dakota Shakespeare Festival is to engage, connect, and inspire communities by exploring our shared human experiences through inclusive, professional Shakespeare productions and theatre arts education. SDSF will perform "Romeo & Juliet" for the 2025 summer season, June 26-29 at 7 p.m. each night. Bring your blanket or lawn chairs to Prentis Park in Vermillion. Admission is free.
Mark you calendars! Each year, over the third full weekend in August, Yankton Area Arts hosts one of the premiere celebrations of the arts. The Annual Summer Arts Festival takes place along the Missouri River at Riverside Park in conjunction with Yankton's Riverboat Days. This juried arts & crafts show features more than 120 fine artists and craftsmen from around the country and includes traditional festival favorites as well as exciting entertainment. Admission is free to the public.

The quarrying of red quartzite in Dell Rapids goes back more than 120 years. In 1987, the community began this annual summer festival in celebration of that history. Head to Dell Rapids in June for three days of fun. Enjoy family entertainment, a parade, 5k and 1 Mile walk or run, craft and food vendors in the park, car show, an ice cream social, a kayak race, street dance, a fishing derby, fireworks and more. The Clay County Fair, held each August in Vermillion, is a classic hometown fair. It features 4-H and open class exhibits, 4-H livestock shows, a kids pedal pull contest, a cornhole tournament, Barnyard Olympics, inflatables, vendors, a free community barbeque on Thursday, and a Backyard BBQ Bash, demolition derby and street dance on Saturday, entertainment and more. Taking place at the Turner County Fairgrounds in Parker each August, the Turner County Fair is the oldest running fair in South Dakota. Admission is free and activities include 4-H exhibits, specialty foods (such as lamb chislic, homemade ice cream, homemade pie, beef or pork sandwiches, fresh-baked donuts and more), kids activities, grandstand events, musical performances and more. The fair gives local 4-H members the opportunity to showcase their projects while also serving as an unofficial end to summer with four fun-filled days before school starts.

Calling all K9s! We invite all dogs to compete in this exciting winter race, the K9 Keg Pull. Man’s best friend will be assigned a division based on their weight. Dogs will wear a harness attached to an appropriately sized keg to pull past the finish line. The fastest dogs in each class win. The races will take place on Deadwood Street by Outlaw Square. Registration is on site, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Races begin at 1 p.m.
The 2023 Quilt Show sponsored by the Black Hills Quilters Guild will be held June 8-10 at The Monument (formerly the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center) in beautiful downtown Rapid City. We are looking forward to another great show and expect to have 400-500 quilts on display and about 20 vendors with quilt-related products. The show, one of the largest in the Dakotas, is a colorful feast for the eyes. The hours for 2023 are 5-8 p.m. on Thursday (preview), 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday, and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday. (Please disregard any hours shown to the left under SEE ALL DATES.) Admission is $7 per day, or $10 for a three-day pass. Free admission for children.
