Ingalls Homestead, De Smet
Experience Laura Ingalls Wilder in South Dakota
De Smet, South Dakota, holds a special place in American literature as the Little Town on the Prairie made famous by author Laura Ingalls Wilder. This charming town served as the backdrop for several of Wilder’s beloved "Little House on the Prairie" books, chronicling her family’s pioneer life on the South Dakota prairie in the late 1800s.
Today, visitors can walk in Laura’s footsteps, exploring historic homes, schools and the landscapes that inspired her stories. Discover the legacy of one of America’s most cherished authors in De Smet. Whether you experience the Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant, tour the family homestead or pick up supplies at the same place the Wilder family shopped, folks in De Smet are ready to make you feel, in Laura’s own words, “sweet and good inside.”

We were living on the frontier in South Dakota then. There's no more frontier within the boundaries of the United States, more's the pity, but then we were ahead of the railroad in a new unsettled country. Our nearest and only neighbor was 12 miles away and the store was 40 miles distant.
