The Fort Meade Recreation Area just east of Sturgis includes the Fort Meade Cavalry Post, the Old Fort Meade Cavalry Museum, the Fort Meade Post Cemetery and the Centennial Trail. It also adjoins the Black Hills National Cemetery and Bear Butte State Park. The area includes approximately 6,700 acres of forest and grasslands, and offers options for activities such as biking, hiking, camping, picnicking, wildlife viewing, fishing and hunting. The Fort Meade Recreation Area is a unit of the U.S. Department of Interior's Bureau of Land Management.
Fort Pierre Chouteau stood as a symbol of the relations between Euro-Americans and American Indians and their interdependence for nearly 25 years (1832-1857). It was one of the most important fur trade forts of the western frontier. While no visible remains exist at the site today, there is a marker positioned at the end of gravel path just north of the city of Fort Pierre.
The Fort Pierre Railroad Depot was built in 1906 by the Chicago and NorthWestern Railroad as part of their expansion west to Rapid City. It was closed and sold as surplus in 1963. The Depot was moved to a ranch near Mud Butte, but was returned to Fort Pierre in March 2013 and restored. It is owned by the Verendrye Museum and officially opened for visitors Memorial Day 2016. The Depot is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Saturday, and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday from late May through early September.

The Fort Pierre National Grassland (FPNG) includes approximately 116,000 acres of federal land located south of Fort Pierre, north of Interstate 90, and west of the Lower Brule Indian Reservation. The topography ranges from flat to gently rolling hills with large drainages on the north and west boundaries containing relatively steep slopes and creeks that flow toward the Bad River and the Missouri River. The Ranger District office, located in Fort Pierre, is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
The history of Fort Sisseton stretches back more than 130 years, when a series of forts were established in eastern Dakota Territory under the direction of Maj. Gen. John Pope. While in operation, the soldiers stationed at the fort ensured safe passage for settlers, surveyors and others into the Dakota Territory. In 1959, the fort was designated a State Historical Park. This 1864 frontier army outpost has 14 of the original buildings still intact.
