Rock climbers of any age or experience level will find something to love about South Dakota.  The incredible granite spires of Custer State Park’s Needles climbing area is probably the most famous place to ascend in South Dakota. The steep limestone of Spearfish Canyon makes for a modern sport-climbing wonderland.  Most people are familiar with the iconic Mount Rushmore, but did you know that you can climb the area there as well? The cracks of Devils Tower provide yet another amazing climbing opportunity just over the South Dakota/Wyoming border in the west, but eastern South Dakota has its own charming climbing areas, including the quartzite-laden Palisades State Park. Together, these spots and others make South Dakota a true climbing paradise.
