What was once a mining town is now the place to eat, explore and recharge
Once home to the largest gold mine in the northern hemisphere, Lead is now an outdoor adventure hotspot. And the mine? It’s been converted into a cutting-edge underground science lab. Learn about neutrinos and why they need to be studied as far as possible from cosmic rays at the free Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center. You can also rent bicycles here for touring the town. Can't beat that fresh air!
That Open Cut remnant of the Homestake Gold Mine is one of the most powerful views in town, but there’s beauty—and recreational opportunity—everywhere around this mountain community. Hikers, fishermen, photographers, mountain bikers, skiers, snowmobilers and ATVers have plenty of ways and places to explore. Terry Peak Ski Area offers the highest skiing between the Rocky Mountains and the Alps. When you’re looking to fuel up for adventures, Lewie’s Burgers, the Sled Haus, and an old miner’s traditional meal of King’s Pasties can hit the spot. Afterwards, quench your thirst at Dakota Shivers Brewing. Don’t forget to check out the elegant Historic Homestake Opera House on Main Street, which hosts plays, musicals, concerts, galas and more.
