Some might be confused to see a pickle or olives dropped in their beer. Those people are probably not from South Dakota.
Even within the state, the definition of a “South Dakota Martini” differs. Some say it’s a lager with an added pickle spear, but many die-hards use olives instead. Some even request “extra juice,” meaning they want some brine poured in there. Heck, order during the right season, and you might get a fresh stalk of asparagus.
But the most common version is also known as a “red beer.” Mix a lager -- the cheaper, the better -- with some tomato juice (or Bloody Mary mix, if you’re feeling spicy). Add a pickle or olives to taste.
Sounds crazy? Maybe. But an ice-cold red beer in the summer is a thing of mouth magic. Don’t be afraid to try one during your next South Dakota adventure. You won’t get any funny looks from our bartenders when you belly up for a South Dakota Martini.
