Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo
Since 1971, the city of Mitchell has hosted the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo. This PRCA rodeo features performances at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at the Rodeo Grounds north of Mitchell. Other events during the four-day celebration include a golf tournament, barrel racing, team roping, Mutton Bustin', parade, Cowboy Church Service, and a chili cook-off. In 1874, Lieutenant Colonel George Custer led the troops of the 7th Cavalry into the Black Hills and discovered gold near present day Custer. To celebrate this event, Custer holds the annual Gold Discovery Days celebration. Activities include an Arts and Crafts Fair on Washington Street, the Gold Panners’ Race, a carnival, a volleyball tournament, a 5K fun run, balloon rally, car show, corn hole tournament and one of the largest parades in the Black Hills. From mid-November through December 31, you can obtain a permit and cut down your own ponderosa pine, spruce or juniper tree in the Black Hills National Forest. Permits can be obtained at all National Forest Service offices in the area (except the Hell Canyon Ranger District office in Custer), several surrounding National Grassland offices, some private businesses and by mail. The annual Black Hills Powwow is takes place at Summit Arena at the Monument (formerly Rushmore Plaza Civic Center) in Rapid City. Known as one of the premier American Indian cultural events in the United States, The Black Hills Powwow attracts hundreds of dancers, singers, artisans and thousands of spectators. The Days of '76 Rodeo was named the PRCA Small Outdoor Rodeo of the Year four times (1998-2001), the PRCA Midsize Rodeo of the Year 14 times (2004-2017), and the Large Outdoor Rodeo of the Year in 2020. It has also held the title of Badlands Circuit Rodeo of the Year 16 times. The Evening Lighting Ceremony at Mount Rushmore National Memorial is held beginning the Friday before Memorial Day to September 30 each year. From May through early August, the ceremony starts nightly at 9 p.m., and from early August through September 30, it starts nightly at 8 p.m. From October through May, there is no ceremony, but the sculpture is illuminated nightly at sunset. Experience the annual organized spring hike up the world's largest mountain carving-in-progress, Crazy Horse Memorial. The 10K (6.2-mile) route, round-trip, takes up to four hours to complete, with hikers setting their own pace. The terrain is hilly and rough with some steep inclines. Starting time is anytime between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. There is also a Fall Volksmarch which takes place the same weekend as the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup (late September). Volksmarches are held as weather permits. Admission for hikers will be discounted. The American Volkssport Association's hike fee is $3 for each participant regardless of age. This free summer music festival is held the third weekend in July in Rapid City's Memorial Park. It features many of the best Christian artists over two days. There is a KidsZone with outreach ministry, on-stage shows, bouncy village, and a children's tent. Several delicious food vendors are on site, as well as merchandise vendors and non-profit booths. Don't miss the Friday night Artist Showcase at Main Street Square in downtown Rapid City. LifeLight Hills Alive brings in 20,000-25,000 people each day.North Country Fiber Fair
The Annual North Country Fiber Fair will be held at the Codington County Extension Complex in Watertown. Visit the website for class and vendor information as well as a complete schedule. Event hours are 12:30-11 p.m. on Friday, 8 a.m.-11 p.m. on Saturday, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday. There are free demonstrations held throughout the event, as well as a fiber animal barn.
