Potato Days
The potato is king in Clark, where local farmers grow bushels of the tasty tuber. That’s why, each year, the town throws a party in honor of its favorite over-used, under-appreciated starch. Locals vie for top honors in a Best Decorated Potato Contest. Past winners included an astronaut, farmer, race cars, and tooth. The Potato Dish Cooking Contests always bring out the best cooks in the county. And, the highlight of the celebration involves grown adults wrestling each other in mashed potatoes.Mickelson Trail Summer Trek
The Mickelson Trail Summer Trek is a three-day bike ride of the entire 109-mile George S. Mickelson Trail. Pre-registration is required. The registration fee includes: annual trail pass, three meals, six snacks, merchandise, and shuttle service. Participants will enjoy the beauty of the Black Hills and travel through scenic valleys, old railroad tunnels, and historic mining towns. Check-in is at Custer and the ride starts in Custer on Tuesday and Wednesday and in Deadwood on Thursday. Lodging is the riders' responsibility.Aberdeen Arts in the Park
For nearly 50 years, since 1976, exhibitors have lined the pavement within Melgaard Park with their handcrafted wares on the third full weekend in June for Aberdeen Arts in the Park. Each year, this juried event attracts exhibitors from more than 12 states. It is estimated that more than 20,000 people go through the park during the two-day event. Arts in the Park features fine and folk art, entertainment and a wide variety of food items. Event hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.Burke Stampede Rodeo
First held in 1991, the annual Burke Stampede Rodeo became a PRCA-sanctioned event in 2021. It features bareback riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, ladies breakaway roping, team roping, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing and bull riding. Other activities include dances Friday and Saturday nights and a cowboy breakfast. Rodeo performances take place nightly at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $15, and at-the-gate tickets are $20 (kids 8 and under are free). Advance tickets are available locally. We will be heating up Aberdeen's Main Street for this year's Sizzlin' Summer Nights. Friday night will feature a beer garden and outdoor concert and Saturday is all about cars and bikes during the Car Show that runs 4-8 p.m. Awards are handed out for Best in Show and People's Choice.Wine, Brew & BBQ
Visitors to the annual Wine, Brew & BBQ have the opportunity to mingle with some of the best competition BBQ teams in the region on Elm Street in downtown Hill City. The professional BBQ teams may be busy preparing their entries into the various divisions of the competition or serving their BBQ for the People’s Choice competition. Stop by the event booth to purchase your beer and wine glass and people’s choice tokens so that you can get in on the action. Expect dozens of regional beers and wines available to wash down the BBQ. Experience an old west shootout aboard the 1880 Train this summer. Dates for 2024 are June 9, 16, 23 and 30; July 7, 14, 21 and 28; and September 1 and 26. The shootout begins at the Hill City station, 5 p.m. round trip departure (2:30 p.m. on September 26). A few bad guys board the train and hide their treasure. The train is stopped by cowboys and “held up” halfway between Hill City and Keystone. It's a good thing the sheriff is in town!
